Newcastle United have opened talks with Demba Ba about a new contract.

Last week, the Magpies were looking to put together a new offer for goal machine Demba Ba and talks got under way in London.

A source close to United owner Mike Ashley told the People: "Talks with Demba Ba and his people have now started and things are really looking positive.

"Mike is determined to send out a message that Newcastle United mean business and that despite talk to the contrary, he is here for the long term.

"The club will not fall into the trap of letting contracts of their best players run down. They will not be dictated to by any player, their agent or by any other club. And if they do have to sell a player it will be on their terms."
