Blackburn Rovers scored a late goal to deny Newcastle United points at home and grab their second win for the week.
Morten Gamst Pedersen scored his second for the week in just the third minute after Brett Emerton pounced on a Cheick Tiote error and dished off for the midfielder to fire home from close range.
The Magpies, who were searching for their fourth win on the trot, hit back two minutes into the second half when striker Andy Carroll enhanced his reputation with a powerful header from a Joey Barton free-kick despite plenty of attention from Christopher Samba.
The match seemed like it was headed for a draw until Rover substitute Jason Roberts grabbed his second in a week when he beat off competition from Toon defender Mike Williamson before slotting past Tim Krul to send the Lancashire club to 13th after being right near the drop zone just last week as Newcastle remained fifth despite the loss
