New Zealand youngster Draper off to England for trials

One-time New Zealand international Greg Draper has left for England to undergo trials with League Two clubs.

The 20-year old, who has played with Canterbury United, Ferrymead, Wellington Phoenix, Melbourne Knights and Team Wellington and made his international All Whites debut in 2008, says it is now time to go and give himself a good chance to play in the UK.

“I've enjoyed being back in Christchurch ... but I really need to go now and give myself the best chance of getting back into professional football,” he said.

Draper will now miss Ferrymead's Chatham Cup quarterfinal against Otago club Caversham this weekend but said the timing was right.

"I'd like to have been here for that, but I got some incredibly cheap flights [to Britain] so I have to go now.”

Draper trialled with Newport County (Blue Square Premier) this week and impressed quite a few people. He will get another go on the weekend to try and get a contract for the coming season. Obviously a bloody shame he missed that monster cup tie against Caversham.
