New Zealand national team players holding their own camp in Melbourne

A-League players in line for a World Cup berth with the New Zealand national team have conducted their own training camp in Melbourne in preparation for the sport's biggest tournament in South Africa in June this year.

Wellington Phoenix players Tim Brown, Ben Sigmund and Leo Bertos, free agent David Mulligan and Gold Coast United striker Shane Smeltz have designed the 12-day camp which will culminate in the May 24 friendly with Australia in Melbourne.

"We're supplying the food but New Zealand Football came to the party with money for airfares, accommodation and a rental car which we are really grateful for," Sigmund said.

"I suppose what we have done is unique ... but we desperately needed to get away from distractions and be focused on football."

The camp kicks off on April 28 and was designed due to the fact that the All Whites players do not have access or money to come up with anything of higher quality.

"Other World Cup teams get paid a lot more money and get everything you could possibly need," added Sigmund.

"We've heard England have three pitches at their base in South Africa mapped out to the size of the fields their group matches are on. Those are things we could never dream of."
