New York City FC striker David Villa is out of Spain's World Cup qualifier with Liechtenstein on Tuesday night.

Making a comeback appearance against Italy at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, Villa hadn't featured on European soil since the 2014 Champions League final but is now forced to the setup early.

Suffering the thigh injury in training on Sunday morning, the player's club New York City FC have been informed of his condition.

NYCFC will take charge of his treatment once he returns to the US.
