New York caretaker Williams in line for top job

New York Red Bulls' interim coach Richie Williams is the leading contender to take the job full-time next season. The 39-year old took over the reins from Juan Carlos Osorio who resigned with eight matches remaining and did a great job in producing a 3-3-2 record during his tenure.

At the time the Red Bulls were struggling at the foot of MLS but Williams turned it around and now club managing director Erik Stover admits he has a great chance to be appointed as the new head coach.

"I think he's done an outstanding job," Stover said. "It's a pretty tough position to take over. Obviously morale was very low, we had a lot of injuries and he showed his mettle. For my money he should be a finalist and we're going to work through that."

Stover said the club will not rush into a decision.

"There's no date because we want to make sure we make the right decision and we don't want to hurry it," Stover said. "Obviously we're running out of time, but we don't really feel pressure with it yet."

Williams said he would love the opportunity to take control of the Red Bulls.

"I would love to be here, love to be part of the Red Bull organization," Williams said. "Of course, it's such a beautiful stadium, the best stadium in the country, it would be nice to be here on opening day next season."
