New Sheffield United boss Weir to use Smith, Moyes influence

David Weir says he will tap into the managerial nous of two close friends following his appointment as Sheffield United boss.

The former Rangers and Everton defender has taken charge of the League One club and admits he will use some of the influence of former bosses Walter Smith and David Moyes as he goes about his business at Bramall Lane.

"The two of them have been fantastic," said the ex-Scotland skipper.

"They've got massive experience in management and are both of the same mindset and told me to call any time I want. I'll be more than happy to do that to get there.

"It's my job and I'll do it the way I see fit, but having those guys on the end of a phone is a fantastic asset for me. I'll definitely use them.

"Moyesie told me 'Sheffield United are a great club, and this is a great opportunity for you. You're ready for it - now go and enjoy it'.

"He taught me a hell of a lot about what's needed to be a top manager and has been a massive influence in my career.

"What he does best of all is teaches players how to win - and that is what I want to do here."
