Portsmouth's takeover by Dr Sulaiman Al Fahim is in serious doubt.
The Sun says Dr Sulaiman's business connections are now to be studied over concerns that his company Hydra Properties is part of a wider group chaired by the brother of Manchester City's owner Sheikh Mansour.
Premier League rules forbid two clubs being owned by the same controlling interest.
Dr Sulaiman must show his Fahim Asia Associates group, which is bidding for Pompey, has no connection with Hydra.
Spokesman Ivo Ilic Gabara said: "When Al-Fahim Asia associates put together the offer to acquire Portsmouth they were at the time, and are today, very confident they can fully meet the criteria set by the Premier League."
