New Everton director Brands promises academy spending

New director of football Marcel Brans has revealed he will continue to fast-track youth players into the first-team setup.

The Dutchman oversaw the production and development of Georginio Wijnaldum, Dries Mertens, Kevin Strootman and Davy Propper at PSV Eindhoven.

And he hopes that he can help develop more Toffees talent, which has seen Beni Baningime, Tom Davies and Jonjoe Kenny emerge in recent times.

"England is one of the biggest football countries in the world but I think we also have to spend money in the Academy," he told the club's website.

"One of the goals when I started at PSV was to get more from our academy. Now, eight years later, 50 per cent of the first-team squad is from our own system.

"That's a big result but I did not achieve that [on my own] - we did that with the help of good people in the youth academy.

"It's an important structure for young players at PSV to fulfil their education at the club and finally make the step to the first team and it's very important for a club like Everton to do that also.

"Everton have a good reputation in that and also have a few good young players in the first-team squad already and I think we have to work on that for the future."
