Incoming Newcastle Jets coach Branko Culina has revealed why he back flipped on his initial thoughts in regards to the job.
After Gary van Egmond resigned as coach, Culina was reluctant to take over until he had a meeting with club owner Con Constantine.
"My initial reaction was that I didn't need the job," Culina told The Australian.
"But I met (owner) Con (Constantine) at lunch today and he made an offer which I found difficult to refuse.
"It has nothing to do with finances and more to do with a desire to help the club and to try to prove something to myself."
Culina also revealed that he wants to prove some people wrong after enduring a tough time when he was dumped as Sydney FC coach in 2007/08.
"I wasn't bitter but I would be lying if I said I wasn't deeply hurt by it," Culina said. "I felt I deserved better than that.
"That's the past," he said. "I am now in a terrific environment. Con is great to work with and the players are fantastic."
