New Birmingham management team looking forward to home debut

Birmingham City assistant manager Andy Watson admits he and Alex McLeish are excited about making their St Andrews debut this weekend.

McLeish's reign has started with successive away trips but on Saturday it's his opening home game, against Reading.

"It's the first time in front of our own support, and we are looking forward to that side of it," Watson enthused. "In fact, there are a number of reasons why we are looking forward to it.

"We've had two away games which have been contrasting in terms of the finish to them.

"Everyone likes the comfort of their own supporters, and we've heard so many good things about St Andrew's and the backing Birmingham get. We want to create a team that is difficult to beat there but also one that will try to win games as well. That's what we've always been about.

"We're not just about turning up and defending, but scoring goals as well. We got three in the first game at Tottenham and scored up at Newcastle and perhaps had one or two other opportunities. On another day, we might have taken them.

"Hopefully we will play a style of football that is the perfect combination: it makes you difficult to beat but is also pleasing on the eye.

"That is what we are trying to set out to do. We know Birmingham supporters are very passionate and can really make St Andrew's a tough place to play so hopefully we can give them something and they will get right behind us, which can be such a big help."
