Neville tells Man Utd boss Van Gaal: Rooney is a striker

Gary Neville believes Wayne Rooney is much better suited in an attacking role rather than as a midfielder.Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has opted to play the club's third all-time goalscorer as a deep-lying midfielder this term, which has restricted the England captain's scoring output to eight goals in 22 Premier League outings.

Neville told talkSPORT that he feels Rooney, who scored 17 league goals last term, gives United a lot more when he is played as a central forward rather than in the 'Paul Scholes role'.

"I don't think midfield is Wayne Rooney's best position," England coach Neville said.

"I think what happened at Man United earlier on in the season was he was put there out of necessity because of injuries and he's ended up staying there.

"Now he seems to have gone back [to being a forward] and I certainly think he's better up top."
