Manchester United legend Gary Neville admits Graham Alexander beat Paul Scholes to the manager's job at Salford City.
Joint bosses Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley left the Ammies despite leading the club to the National League this season.
Scholes was linked with the vacant hotseat despite being part of the Class of 92 which have a stake in the club, along with the Neville brothers, Nicky Butt and Ryan Giggs.
But Neville, who heads up the operation, instead decided to appoint former Fleetwood manager Alexander as Salford bid to reach the Football League.
When asked about why he opted against Scholes, who was linked with the Oldham job last year, Neville told the Daily Mail: “If he was the absolute best person we would appoint him, but we felt as though Graham was best person for job."
