Nelsen to leave QPR to replace ex-Arsenal striker Mariner at Toronto FC

Ryan Nelsen is set to leave QPR to take the head coaching role at Toronto FC according to reports.

The Ontario club has sacked Paul Mariner and are expected to unveil New Zealand national team captain Nelsen on Tuesday.

35-year old central defender Nelsen has been a mainstay in Harry Redknapp's R's side this season but it appears as though he will hang up his boots to focus on management.

"He is a massive part of your team (but) he wants to be a manager and it is a chance for him to manage a club," Redknapp told reporters this week.

"He has been fantastic. I took him to Tottenham last year from Blackburn. He's one of the best pros I've ever met in my life, a fantastic player, a great trainer, a leader."

The expected move is a massive one by new Toronto president Kevin Payne who moved from DC United this offseason - the club Nelsen led to the MLS Cup in 2004.
