National Youth League Round 16 review

Round 16 of the National Youth League saw three decisive results with Adelaide's 5-0 rout of Newcastle the biggest. Braces to both Michael De Bono and Jason Spagnuolo and a single to Francesco Monterosso did the damage for the Reds as they went four points clear in third position on the table with a game in hand.

Monterosso moved closer to the NYL Golden Boot with his seventh goal of the season and is now just two behind Sydney FC's Sean Rooney.

Queensland Roar first team player Tim Smits scored a hat trick to help his youth side to a 3-0 win over the Central Coast Mariners in Gosford.

Smits opened the scoring in the 25th minute and backed it up with a second half brace to give the Mariners no chance.

Melbourne Victory scored an important 2-0 win over Perth Glory in Perth to edge closer to the top four.

Goals to Aziz Behich and Dimitri Hatzimouratis were enough to give the visitors full points and bridged the gap between them and the Glory who sit in fourth position.

Sydney FC had the bye in Round 16.
