Nasty Twitter trolls turn on Southampton starlet Shaw after charity gesture

Ugly Twitter trolls have turned a wonderful gesture from Southampton fullback Luke Shaw into a nightmare for the teenager.

The Mirror reports the 18-year-old left-back sent out a message to his 111,000 followers saying that for every retweet he received he would donate 10p to 'Children in Need'.

Later in the evening Shaw posted again to confirm the final number of retweets - some 38,000 - and the final amount he would donate - over £3,800.

But he has now been forced to remove both tweets having being subjected to numerous negative responses branding him "cheap" for "seeking attention."

Norwich City midfielder Elliott Bennett soon took to the social media site to jump to the England Under-21 international's defence.

"Why is it people love when footballers do wrong? But when they do good there seems to be another motive?! Just except it," he posted.

Shaw's donation, along with thousands of others helped Children in Need raise a record-breaking final total in excess of £31m.
