Napoli's deal for Roma midfielder Mauro Esposito has fallen through.

Napoli sports director Pierpaolo Marino said: "We had the agreement with Cagliari, but (co-owners) Roma at the last minute did not present themselves. Evidently they changed their mind and preferred to keep the player."
