Matteo Darmian could be on his way back to Italy before the end of August.
That is the opinion of Sky Sports who are reporting that the Manchester United defender continues to be linked with a Serie A return just a year after leaving his homeland.
Napoli and AS Roma are competing for the signature of the 26-year-old right-back who was left out of Jose Mourinho's match-day squad for Sunday's Premier League season opener against AFC Bournemouth.
It appears as though Mourinho has Antonio Valencia as his first-choice right-sided full-back while it is understood that youngster Timothy Fosu-Mensah is next in line, clearing a pathway for former Torino star Darmian to head back home.
Both Napoli and Roma have been linked with Darmian in recent times and it is believed that they will go head-to-head in a bid to sign him before the summer transfer window slams shut in a fortnight.
