Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole was almost on his way to Napoli on Friday.
The Sunday Mirror says Stoke's £5million move for 25-year-old Cattermole broke down hours before Friday's transfer deadline.
That was after Napoli coach Rafa Benitez, who tried to sign him when he was in charge at Liverpool, had enquired.
