Fulham skipper Danny Murphy expects new manager Mark Hughes to make more signings this week.
Manchester City's Roque Santa Cruz has been mentioned as a possible target for former Eastlands boss Hughes, while a deal for Benfica defender Rafik Halliche is close to completion.
But Murphy does not expect chairman Mohamed Al Fayed to abandon a sense of financial responsibility.
"I think we still have debt so we have to be careful not to go over the top and put ourselves in a whole world of trouble for the sake of short-term gain," said the midfielder.
"It's boring, but stability is a word we use a lot and we have to improve bit by bit. With all the other clubs spending so much money, we still need to improve the squad of course and you need funds to do that.
"How much, I don't know, but I imagine the chairman will give the manager some money to spend. The chairman over the years has been very generous in that respect.
"I would envisage in the next few weeks that we'll see some new bodies at the Cottage. I just hope there's no central midfielders!"
