The wife of Jonny Evans has defended the Manchester United player over his spitting shame.

Evans was slapped with a six match ban for his role in last week's bust-up with Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse.

But Helen Evans an MUTV presenter, pleaded her husband's innocence while live on air.

During 'Thursday Focus', Helen, 26, said: "It's a tricky situation but I have to say it's definitely not in his nature.

"Jonny didn't even know he'd been spat back at until after the game when he watched the footage. People can believe what they want but that's the truth.

"He spat on the floor and it was obviously near Cisse. Unfortunately, that's just the way the camera angle saw it."
