Manchester United boss David Moyes acknowledged the first half performance was below par but felt they improved as the game progressed and had their chances even in the opening 45 minutes.
"We wanted to top the group and we have. The win helps us, improves our form. We didn't play well for 30 minutes and they had two or three opportunities so we were fortunate it remained nil-nil.
But even then we had chances. The performance was similar to Newcastle, the difference being we scored.
"I was tough with them at half-time but we needed to be, we need to win games. A club like Manchester United has to be trying to win the trophy.
Moyes also accepted that because of the stature of the Old Trafford club they will be looked on as "one of the favourites" to lift the Champions League trophy.
