Moyes hoping Jelavic, Pienaar signings can help lift Everton

David Moyes is hoping that his two winter signings can help lift Everton back up the table after an indifferent first half of the season.

The Toffees have clawed their way back to 10th on the table with three positive results in a row, culminating in Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Manchester City, and now have their work cut out for them if they want to continue climbing the rankings.

Moyes brought in Nikica Jelavic from Rangers on a permanent deal and has loaned former Toffees midfielder Steven Pienaar from Tottenham and he is hoping the duo can spark the team into life although he knows not to put too much pressure on the new players.

"Obviously won't know how Nikica will do, there is no manager in the country who can guarantee when he brings in a player he will work, no matter whether you pay £50m or £5m,” he said.

"We shouldn't be asking an awful lot (early on) but over the years we have tended to bring people in and we have tended to spend round about that and have made something out of it.

"I am hoping Steven and Nikica can give us that little bit and keep everyone on a high because we want to try to finish the season strongly and over the years we have tended to do that."
