Benfica thumped Tottenham 3-1 in the first-leg of their Europa League tie.
The Daily Star Sunday says Moyes had scouts run the rule over Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay on Thursday.
Moyes sees the Argentina international as a potential replacement for the departing Nemanja Vidic.
