Mourinho will determine where Man Utd star Rooney plays for England - Allardyce

Recently-appointed England manager Sam Allardyce has indicated that Wayne Rooney still has a strong future with the national team.

'Big Sam' was unveiled in front of the media at St George's Park on Monday when he suggested that current captain Rooney had no guarantees that he would continue on in the role.

However, former Sunderland boss Allardyce did make it clear that the 30-year-old had a key part to play in the Three Lions setup, only for the position to be decided by United boss Jose Mourinho, after Rooney was deployed as a midfielder by Roy Hodgson at Euro2016.

"I still think Wayne Rooney still has a massive place to play in the England side," he said.

"I don't think there is any doubt about that."

Allardyce added: "I think Jose will determine [where he plays for England].

"If Jose says he is not going to play him in centre midfield and he is playing up front and scoring goals for Manchester United, then it would be pointless me bringing him into England and playing him in centre midfield."
