Mourinho thanks van Gaal for Man Utd Community Shield triumph

Jose Mourinho was full of gratitude for predecessor Louis van Gaal in the wake of Manchester United's win at Wembley on Sunday.

The Red Devils defeated last season's Premier League champions Leicester City 2-1 to lift the Community Shield which was mad possible by van Gaal's side of 2015/16 which won the FA Cup.

Mourinho touched on that success as one of the major reasons for his team being able to hold aloft a first piece of silverware since the Portuguese took over from the Dutchman earlier this summer.

He said on BT Sport: "I have to thank Mr van Gaal because without the victory in the FA Cup we wouldn't be here today so I am getting a trophy for the club and the boys and the fans and myself but I'm playing this match not because I won the FA Cup.

"I play this match because Mr van Gaal won the FA Cup so congratulations to him because he's part of this."

Jesse Lingered opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with a fabulous individual goal before Jamie Vardy raced onto a short backpass from Marouane Fellaini to level for the Foxes seven minutes into the second half.

In the 82nd minute, Zlatan Ibrahimovic further endeared himself to the United supporters by heading home Antonio Valencia's cross to give United the win on a sunny afternoon in London.
