The Sunday Mirror says his fate could now be decided by Chelsea's ­Champions League fortunes.

Reservations about possible replacements for Mourinho have stopped the club's ­hierarchy from acting decisively over the ­disastrous run of Premier League results.

There is no appetite – from both parties – for a Carlo Ancelotti return, Guus Hiddink is seen as past his sell-by date and Diego Simeone is unlikely to walk out on Atletico Madrid mid-season.

Pep Guardiola may be a ­long-term target for Roman Abramovich, but he is committed to Bayern Munich until at least the end of the season.

That means Mourinho appears to have been given an extended chance to prove he can arrest the disastrous slide.
