Motherwell's McCall thrilled to be honing in on Champions League

Motherwell boss Stuart McCall is delighted that his side are on the brink of Champions League football even if it is by default.

Third-placed Well moved eight points clear of fourth-placed Dundee United courtesy of a 1-0 win at Heart of Midlothian last night and will get a qualifying place in Europe's top competition if they can maintain that position.

With second-placed Rangers set to miss out on the Champions League because of their financial and administration situation, Motherwell will step into their spot with ex-'Gers midfielder McCall hoping his old club can do the business over their nearest rivals United tonight.

"I'm not going to say I'm going to get my old Rangers scarf out because it isn't true," he said after last night's victory.

"But obviously I am hoping for a result. Dundee United have to win all three games now and if they did that they would deserve third position.

"If we end up in the Champions League - and we still have to get there - it would be by default.

"There's no doubt about that because of the nightmare Rangers have gone through.

"But if we finish third it will be an outstanding achievement for Motherwell.

"To get Europe alone would be terrific but if we clinch that Champions League place it will be beyond our wildest dreams.

"You could never have foreseen that at the start of the season.

"Nobody can match Rangers or Celtic in the SPL but because of the nightmare going on at Ibrox it gave somebody the chance and the team that finished third was going to get in there. If it's us I'm sure the supporters will love that when the time comes."
