Motherwell keen on signing ex-Sunderland, Bradford defender Ramsden

Motherwell manager Stuart McCall says he would like to sign free agent Simon Ramsden.

Motherwell manager Stuart McCall says he would like to sign free agent Simon Ramsden.

The 30-year old defender/midfielder has been trialling with the Well after he finished up at Bradford City at the end of last season and his performances in recent pre-season matches suggest to McCall that he will be a good fit at Fir Park.

"We moved Simon into the middle of the park at the end on Tuesday (against Raith) and he can play right-back, centre-back and in there. He came through fine,” McCall told the Daily Recordof the former Sunderland and Rochdale man.

"We still have to wait on decisions being made. I would think most clubs will be clearer by the end of the week the finances they'll have to play with.

"If I have the finances will I be looking to sign him? Possibly. He's not an out-and-out centre-half but he certainly ticks a lot of boxes and has experience.

"He's a good pro, talks well, has fitted in well and can play a few positions, like Tim could. Working with a small squad, that's the kind of players you're looking at.

"Hopefully he'll fit into our wage structure as well, so I'll have a chat with him - but we have to wait for clarification later this week."
