Motherwell close to securing McFadden to new contract

James McFadden is close to signing a new deal with Motherwell according to reports.

The former Everton and Sunderland forward returned to Fir Park last season on a short-term contract and after training with the club this preseason, is expected to put pen to a fresh deal.

"I'm cautiously optimistic about James signing," said Well boss Stuart McCall.

"The offer's been made to him, and while I don't know the length, they just need to tie up the bits and pieces of it.

"Unless something comes out of left field, I don't think it's going to be difficult to get something in writing. I'm sure that will happen as soon as we get back to Britain.

"I'd think it would be a similar situation to last season where someone pays his wages, but that's not my territory.

"I did say to him that if he wanted to be involved in the European games, he needed to come to Spain with us.

"He's in good condition, but he missed the first week of hard running, so he's happy about that!"
