Speaking after the 1-1 pre-season friendly draw with Millwall, McGhee said: "I've got permission from Gordon Strachan to speak to Adam but I haven't done that yet.
"It's possibly the case that I'm calling the wrong number and he's sitting at home wondering why I haven't phoned him!
"I went to see him the other night and he played well. I hope he feels if there's anybody who can help him get back to what he could be then it's me.
"There's no-one with more faith in the lad than me and he's got an opportunity here to recover from a disappointing couple of years.
"At Brighton he was our best player week-in, week-out; he's only a young lad and played right-back, centre-half, centre-forward and was the best player every week; the lad has a lot going for him."
