Mort: Allardyce bringing better quality signings to Newcastle

Newcastle United chairman Chris Mort believes a better quality of player will arrive at St James' Park thanks to the knowledge of manager Sam Allardyce.

Mort told the Evening Chronicle: "Historically we have made some great buys, but at the same time spent some money on players who were not great buys.

"One of Sam Allardyce's greatest strengths is finding and buying players, and we are hoping he will bring some sense and stability to the club's signings.

"It does not matter if we do not spend a ton of money on a player as long as we get the right man, like we did with Mark Viduka.

"Yes, he is on a big salary, but he was a free transfer and he is a brilliant signing for us.

"So we will not be spending money just to show that we can. That is not the object of our game.

"Our objective is to get a team on to the pitch which is going to win us football matches and have us near the top of the Premiership.

"Some money here in the past has been spent wisely and some not so wisely. Players have come and gone and the club has lost money on them - some of them who were not good enough to get into the team.

"One of the advantages of having Sam Allardyce here as manager is, as we have seen at Bolton Wanderers, he is good at spotting and finding players.

"Now he is willing to spend money on players and so I am, but neither of us want to buy the wrong players.

"Some of the players we are currently looking at have been playing Champions League football, and clearly we will have to spend money to get them out of these teams as well as big wages.

"There are not a lot of them around, and those who are not for sale, so we will have to come up with a bit more."
