The fact that Portugal and Spain have joined together to launch a World Cup bid for 2018 has not deterred Football Federation Australia CEO Ben Buckley.
Buckley believes that the more bids from the same continent could make it difficult for the country in question to accumulate enough votes, making it easier for bids from Asia, Africa and North America.
"It's not surprising that there's so much interest from Europe," he said.
"I think with Spain and Portugal coming into the mix [with] England, Holland and Belgium, and Russia, the four bidders from Europe, it certainly makes it a very competitive field. But it also opens up opportunities for Australia in that it's not necessarily a single bidder from one confederation.
"I guess we aspire to be [the only Asian bidder] but that's a factor that's outside of our control," Buckley added.
"We won't know until February 2 when expressions of interest have to be lodged with FIFA about who is genuine about their bid.
"So we'll have to wait and see about what has been speculation and what is genuine interest in participating in the bid process."
