Moore comes clean on Kavala 'sacking'

Australia international Craig Moore has come clean on his supposed sacking by Greek Super League Kavala. The former Brisbane Roar captain was reportedly axed by the club this week for an off-field indiscretion but has revealed that he left in his own accord to freshen himself up back in Australia.

Speaking to foxsports.com.au, Moore said: "I captained the side on Sunday.

"We got beat 3-1 and I scored the penalty. After the game, there's two games left in the season and really they were dead rubbers with no chance of qualifying for Europe.

"I played the last 15 games on the bounce in a 2½-month spell and basically my body was at a stage that I felt I needed a rest. I had to get back to Australia and get some body maintenance to freshen up for the World Cup.

"You can imagine my surprise when I get back home and hear these sorts of stories. It's not the first time it's happened to me with a club situation, and it's a major disappointment that this is something Kavala have come out with.

"I spoke with the coach, Aad de Mos, and he's come out and said it's a lot of nonsense. I spoke with Pim Verbeek on Sunday; I've gone through all the right channels to let everyone know my thoughts.

"As far as the sacking goes, that's absolute nonsense.

"I didn't take my wages for all of March, and I decided it was the right time to come home and get the rest I needed, which I otherwise wouldn't have got, before the World Cup.

"It was my decision to come home.

"I'm probably not surprised with what's come out because it as a unique experience in Greece, and I ... saw quite a few things for the first time with regard to football. I thought's I'd probably seen most things happen in football ...

"The president's quite a character and maybe with me wanting to leave they thought they'd issue a statement that suited them. But, like I say, there was no sacking.

"Unfortunately, when I left and got in contact with the club to organise my papers, they still didn't get back to me."
