Montreal Impact still searching for ‘difference maker’ DP – Saputo

Montreal Impact owner Joey Saputo says the franchise is still on the hunt for a Designated Player.

Montreal Impact owner Joey Saputo says the franchise is still on the hunt for a Designated Player.

The 19th MLS club kicked off their MLS career with a 2-0 loss to fellow Canadians Vancouver Whitecaps on the weekend and are still searching for that player who can be brought in to add plenty of quality and depth to the playing roster.

The Impact have been linked with the likes of Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka, Alessandro del Piero, Luca Toni and Michael Ballack but Saputo says that the exploration is ongoing as Montreal look to settle into things as quickly as possible.

“We need to get a DP and our fans are educated enough to know we need a difference maker,” he said.

“But it has to make financial sense, too. With Montreal, we have a great selling point for a European player. It’s the North American experience and in Montreal you have a European way of life.

“As an owner, I’m a fan first. I want to win. We still have work to do and we want it to happen sooner rather than later. Our fans will be patient, but we don’t expect for them to accept the expansion team excuse for very long.”
