Riccardo Montolivo has been stripped of the Fiorentina captaincy.

The midfielder has refused to pen a new deal with the Viola, with his current agreement set to expire in less than a year.

According to reports, the Viola squad backed the player to remain as captain, but the club seemingly have other ideas.

Veteran defender Alessandro Gamberini is now expected to lead the side out during the 2011-12 campaign.
