AC Milan captain Riccardo Montolivo admits they failed to impose themselves on Ajax.
Milan came away from Amsterdam with a Champions League point after their 1-1 draw.
"Ajax started very strong and they make possession their greatest weapon," said Montolivo.
"Perhaps we were a little too deep in the first half, but the game changed after the break and we could've taken the lead."
Mario Balotelli was available, as his three-match ban only applies to Serie A, and converted a last-gasp penalty.
"Balotelli is our added value and simply too important for this team. He made mistakes, but these things happen and you can't make someone carry the cross forever."
