Arsene Wenger is considering fielding Nacho Monreal alongside Calum Chambers at the heart of the defence during Arsenal's opening Premier League encounter against Liverpool this weekend.

Arsenal are currently facing a crisis in central defence as Gabriel Paulista has joined Per Mertesacker on the injury list and manager Wenger now does not have too many options to choose from ahead of Sunday's home meeting with the Reds as even Laurent Koscielny is not match fit.

Young duo Chambers and Holding were seen as the two most likely candidates to fill the centre-back role against Liverpool but the Daily Star have claimed that Wenger is considering fielding full-back Monreal in central defence alongside Chambers, while Kieran Gibbs fills in at left-back.
