Monaco set to snap up Tottenham fullback Assou-Ekotto

AS Monaco are chasing Tottenham fullback Benoit Assou-Ekotto.

The People says Monaco are making a move to sign the Cameroon international, provided they can sort out a major tax row.

Monaco are top of France's second flight, under former Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri, with their Russian billionaire owner Dmitri Rybolovlev ready to make a huge summer investment to challenge Paris St-Germain.

Assou-Ekotto and fellow Spurs full-back Kyle Walker are both on Monaco's hitlist, although the England right-back is not believed to fancy such a move.

Yet all of Monaco are currently fighting a French FA ruling which would strip them of their right to offer extremely low tax rates to foreign footballers.

With the rest of French football having to impose a 75 per cent tax on their players, many clubs insist that Monaco's tax-haven status gives them an unfair advantage.

The row could even end up with Monaco being booted out of the League - and Assou-Ekotto looking for a different summer destination.
