The Russian billionaire bought a 66 per cent stake in Monaco back in 2011, but not before he had given serious consideration to trying to buy United.
Speaking to Paris Match he said: "Why Monaco? I always wanted to move there, but my wife did not agree.
"When she filed for divorce, I was finally able to realise my dream.
"I love the climate, the quality of life, but also the infrastructure and geographical location - it is convenient for me because I travel a lot.
"But AS Monaco is a club with a long and beautiful story, a team of local and national significance. In that sense it is unique."
