Molby cannot understand why Liverpool want to sell Lucas

Jan Molby cannot fathom why Liverpool are looking to get rid of Lucas Leiva this summer.

With Lucas having been snubbed for the first two games of the Premier League campaign, it has been made clear by the club hierarchy that the midfielder is no longer a part of the plans at Anfield under manager Brendan Rodgers.

As a result, it is widely expected that Lucas will be leaving Liverpool this summer but ex-Red Molby is failing to understand the logic behind the decision to offload the Brazilian star.

Molby wrote in his column for the Liverpool Echo: "I'm still a little bit confused as to why we're happy to let Lucas Leiva leave. I'm not suggesting he's the best number six in the world but he's best number six Liverpool have.

"If Jordan Henderson misses out against Arsenal, I'd have put the Brazilian in there.

"It's the manager's call, though, and he clearly believes he can do without Lucas who, at this stage of his career, really needs to be playing games regularly.

"Losing Henderson would be a big blow. You need energy against Arsenal, as they have arguably the best set of individual talents in the Premier League. It's about being able to deal with that at the Emirates. If we come away with a point, it will be a great result to continue a good start to the season."
