MLS vice-president Lino Di Cuollo has confirmed that the North American competition are hoping to finalise a deal for Alessandro Nesta.
The Italian centre-back, who recently departed AC Milan, is being heavily linked with a summer move to New York Red Bull with Di Cuollo telling Tuttomercatoweb.com that a possible contract is on the cards.
"It would be an honor for us: Nesta is an icon of football. He has experience, class, highest quality, lead time to the MLS.""Yeah. We're talking, we are pursuing the deal even if it is still not defined," Di Cuollo said.
And Di Cuollo hinted that Nesta would be used as a Designated Player meaning his wages would be outside MLS' usual salary cap.
"Each team has three players that cannot be included in set budget.""Before a specific thing the player talks to the club, but both companies and footballer, discuss with the League, because it us who has the contract," he added.
