MLS are to disband their reserve league in an attempt to strengthen the senior league squads with less developmental player positions.
âWeâre going to be expanding our senior rosters in 2009 and eliminating the reserve division as it exists today,â MLS commissioner Don Garber said in a press conference Friday. âWe are reducing the number of developing players that are on each teamâs roster from ten players to four players.â
With several developmental contract players featuring in this weekends MLS cup final, teams coaching staff may be questioning the decision.
âRight now the focus is to be sure we have the best senior roster and be able to have the most competitive teams we can,â Garber said. âWeâre not walking away from development but weâre saying we need to reconfigure it.â
