MLS chief plays down New York Red Bulls sale claims

MLS Commissioner Don Garber has denied claims that the New York Red Bulls are up for sale.

A report on SI.com suggests that an offer of around $300million for the team and Red Bull Arena would get a deal done as Red Bull look to reduce their investment in the MLS franchise.

But Garber has come out and made it clear that New York will remain in its current form under the same ownership from the Austrian energy drink company.

"I can absolutely assure you that the New York Red Bulls are not for sale," Garber said.

"Both the owner and the management team in Austria and in New York are as committed as ever to Major League Soccer, the club and their fans."

A statement from NYRB added: "There are no plans to sell the New York Red Bulls.

"While interest in soccer continues to grow in the U.S. and MLS continues to expand, Red Bull is confident now more than ever in the investment and committed to the franchise and its supporters."
