MLS chief Garber thanks supporters for record-breaking 2014

MLS commissioner Don Garber has sent an open letter to supporters of the competition, thanking them for a stellar 2014 season.

US Soccer took another massive stride forward during the calendar year with a number of big-name signings by MLS clubs including Jermain Defoe, Gilberto and Michael Bradley (Toronto FC), Maurice Edu (Philadelphia Union), DaMarcus Beasley (Houston Dynamo), Rais M'Bolhi (Philadelphia Union), Michael Parkhurst and Kei Kamara (Columbus Crew).

The US national team also performed above expectations at the 2014 World Cup, progressing out of a group which included eventual winners Germany as well as Portugal and Ghana.

Attendance numbers again increased and the standard of play only continued to get better which Garber feels has Major League Soccer in a very strong position.

The following is Garber's letter to the fans of MLS clubs:

'Dear MLS Supporters,

'I want to thank all of you for your passion and commitment to your Clubs and our League. Your support in 2014 led to record-breaking attendance, viewership and social media engagement.

'This year will be remembered for big signings, the U.S. men's national team escaping the "Group of Death" in Brazil, our homegrown players thriving for both Club and Country, and the LA Galaxy's "First to Five" MLS Cup Championship.

'As the year comes to a close, I am looking forward to celebrating our 20th Season with all of you and to continue delivering on our goal of becoming one of the best leagues in the world.

'From all of us at Major League Soccer, thank you for your support.

'I wish you and your families a wonderful holiday.

'Sincerely,

Don Garber Commissioner
