MLS Commissioner Don Garber said it is now time for Miami to have a team in the North American top flight.
Garber met with close to 60 members of the Miami Ultras, the NASL club's supporters group, to hold talks regarding the team moving into the major league.
Garber made it clear that it would be a major positive for Miami to enter MLS in the very near future, more than likely after a second New York team will enter the competition.
"We want to be here," Garber said. "It's inconceivable for a pro league not to be south of Washington, DC.
"In New York, we have a dire need to go out and capture a broader part of the market. We have many interested ownership groups, with a wide variety of potential stadium plans. In Miami, we're not sure. We're still scratching our head about the market. And we've had no progress with a potential owner."
But Garber said that in order for a team to work in Miami, the supporters would have to really get behind the possible expansion.
"When we hear about the Miami market, we hear about all these pockets of soccer fans," he added. "You need to get everyone together. . . . We're not going to lead the charge to bring a team here."
