Miliband maintains seat on Sunderland board

David Miliband will be keeping his position on the Sunderland board after stepping down as Member of Parliament for South Shields.

The former foreign secretary announced on Tuesday that he was leaving British politics to take up a post with the International Rescue Committee, a charity based in the United States.

But that will not affect his role with the Premier League side, whose board he joined in 2011 as vice-chairman and a non-executive director.

Chief executive Margaret Byrne told the club's official website: "David's knowledge and experience have been a tremendous benefit to Sunderland AFC.

"Naturally we are delighted that he is to continue in his role at the club, and we also wish him every success with this new chapter of his life."
