Mignolet intent on reclaiming Liverpool gloves

Simon Mignolet has expressed his desire to become Liverpool's number one choice goalkeeper once again.

Despite making a strong start to the season, Mignolet was surprisingly dropped to the bench by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp following the return to full fitness of new signing Loris Karius last month.

Mignolet did manage to impress during the midweek 2-1 EFL Cup victory over Tottenham Hotspur and following the clash, the Belgian international has stated that he intends to win back the number one spot between the sticks at Anfield.

The 28-year-old told the Liverpool Echo: "I was happy to play – that's what you want to do week in week out.

"I don't want to be a number two, that's clear. I want to play. I will keep fighting to get my place back.

"I will never give up fighting firstly because that's not in my character to just give up. Secondly because I am not in a situation where I can sit on the bench.

"I'm 28 years old and I want to play week in week out.

"So I'll work hard and I'll never give up - giving up is not what I want to do. I see it as a challenge that I can overcome.

"Hopefully it will be a fair challenge based on performances put in on the pitch."
