Midfield vacancies lump extra weight on Cahill

Tim Cahill knows he has added pressure for the Socceroos next World Cup qualifier with a host of midfield stars missing in action. Cahill, however, is remaining positive and knows he can do the job even though key players Harry Kewell, Mark Bresciano, Vince Grella and Carl Valeri are all unavailable for the October 15 clash against Qatar. The 28-year old has not represented his country for eight months since injuring a bone in his foot but has been back in action for English Premier League club Everton, where he made an immediate impact on his return with a goal in his first game back. He believes he can shift that form into next week's match, announcing himself up for the challenge and also providing leadership to the squad. Speaking to The Age, Cahill said, "We play in such big games with our domestic clubs and internationally we've been on the world stage so it's something that I take with both hands and I take great pride in with people wanting me to be a leader with Lucas Neill and your (Mark) Schwarzers." Cahill also commented on his fitness, stating it was headed in the right direction. "I feel good. I'm training well and working hard," he added. "I've had this setback for six months and people have seen the impact that I've made on the pitch so that's the main thing and hopefully I can make that same impact at international level." Although the Aussies have accounted for Qatar in their last two encounters, Cahill knows the visitors have to be respected and said the Socceroos will have to maintain focus. "The only thing that can beat us is ourselves so we have to make sure we break down every barrier that is thrown at us. "They will probably put 10 or 11 players behind the ball and make it difficult for us. "But we have to show them a lot of respect as we do and we just look forward to playing the game and making it happen in that 90 minutes."
