Middlesbrough's Wheater: I didn't think I'd get a game this season!

David Wheater admits he didn't think he'd get a game for Middlesbrough this season.

The Boro defender scored in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers and said: He said: "I didn't expect to be playing this season. I thought I would be on loan.

"But I am in the team and scoring goals, so it's not going too bad for me. We should have beaten Blackburn. Tuncay should have put his chance away and we had enough chances to win the game.

"They are a good team but we should have got the three points, really."

Boro boss Gareth Southgate is keen to get a deal with the youngster sorted out.

He said: "Talks are ongoing and we are a long way down the line to sorting that out. He is a local lad and this is a club that gives young players a chance.

"David is having a terrific season and standing up to top international players. He is at a lovely stage in his career and it is great to watch."
